tri cell 2

this is my favorite drawing so far because of its complexity and feel of movement. the angle of the lines holding the triangle form make it feel like it's being pulled back and compared to the drawing before the triangle form is braking free it is escaping from the constriction of the lines and triangle. there for being successful in creating freedom under constrictions and rules like we do in life. its finding that feeling of being away from the standard routine that at any other time we follow.
this drawing as a smaller angle to the previous , still obtuse but having it less give it more of struggle to straight and the lines become dominant the angle also points to the right of the page, pointing to the future. In TV we often see if something is progressing it tends to travel in the right direction so for battle scenes the baddies could be moving to the left were the good guys will be moving to the right. using this in my drawing the lines pull the form back as it try's to travel right helps to tap in to that subconscious rule in are brains that it is good and bad.
there is a life like quality to the form like a cellular structure. i can imagine it being in an animated pool or under water or even a design for an under water robot.
(talk about the game flow)

the next move is to try and create recognizable forms out of the triangles. i will do this by either following the contours and shading of the objects or by using its outline but i must try and mimic the same sort of depth by layering the triangles correctly. it will be interesting to see whether it looses or gains any quality with a structure made.

tri cell 1

merging the 2 triangle ideas together of containment and freedom. i think this is deffently the most successful triangle drawing ive done. such a strong sense of movement created by the flowing lines sourced from the triangle. the detail i find captures people to look closer and hopefully take it in more.

the structure of the straight lines keep this life like form contained but at the same time no being overpowering. i achieved this by not overlapping the lines with the form creating a split or crack in the straight lines, a burst of creativity directly effecting the density of the lines around it. would be really exciting if i can get a structure to grow like this to sound and even more interesting if i can make the form it makes random so the curves created by the triangle are new every time make the computer be creative for me ?

finger print form 2

this is a much more successful piece at creating depth than the first fingerprint person. this time i chose to use a racing car as the subject and really took in to account the shadow and tryed to imagine a straight line flowing over the structure so the curves would create the right form. i really like the bottom image and think the subtlety of the structure built with the complex repetition of lines creates a balancing minimal beauty.
I think this would really well as a video projection of the car so the finger print shifts over a moving car as it turns and accelerates. there could be a possibility of glitching and distorting if it were to crash the braking of the form would be reflected the braking in the pattern rule and overlay the finger prints.

like the negative space hand i don't like this as much as the one with form but this i think does work better than the hand one cutting the perspective line was an accident at first but it may be what makes this more exciting. there is so much movement in the structure the one bold horizontal line brakes that in a smart and precise way. i could see this as a part of a website with text / info written opposite the structure.
there is also a strong feeling of architecture in the form although started from a racing car it looks now more like a skyscraper interesting to see how the process of taking away can create new things.

finger print form 1

my first attempt and applying finger print to another form. i wasn't quite sure how to go about it so ive tried a couple ideas. the first is to follow the shadow because this is the form the light touches and will create gaps in the image that makes the perspective lines come through and add another depth. the second to follow the muscle structure (arm) this created long lines with lots of space something i don't want too much or at least not on the edge.
over all this is too flat and looks more like an outline of a person than curved depth. something i do like is how the perspective line has created a wing formation draping from the arms and wings are a symbol for freedom i could possible use this in the future.

getLineIn()

more pics to be added

today I'm trying to see if i can make a sound reactive piece using the program processing. after reading through the processing manual i have i found the way to go about it would be using getLineIn() code using minim sound. it works by using the built in microphone to the computer. the data is converted to the buffer size which i can change. so if i put the buffersize to 2000 the sound waves would be 0 - 2000 so i can draw an array from that and tell the computer to draw theoretically what i like using the buffersize to move twist distort the image 0 being no distortion and 2000 being max... pretty exciting :D

this sketch to show the way the hand could move to the sound. Because sound is in waves it hopefully will be fluid rather and wont glitch.  i now have to work out a way of taking the drawing from paper into code as separate layers.

still dont like it

I've quickly merged the 2 together and found that even with the print i don't like it. its to unclosed in the hand form where the other one branches out and becomes unfamiliar. being so enclosed it takes away the freedom feel that i want to create.

hand print day 2

experimenting with empty space. the thing i noticed most about this is it is unrecognizable where the the perspective hand print takes some to time to figure out and then you can look deeper at the detail but this seems to have no destination or object to relate to. it's empty and flat i could possibly salvage it through movement but i think the print just speaks to people that much more.
somthing i do like about this drawing is the great sense of movment created by the lines and the repetition creating a gradient like pattern by overlaying the lines.

by using my hand print i am putting my own identity in the drawing and if i was to distort it with sound i guess i would be saying how the things around me effect my identity we are all susceptible to influence its the main reason of progression if we weren't influenced by others art its self would struggle to exists i think this is why this piece has so much potential and why away the hand print is the wrong thing to do.

hand print

by covering my hand in pencil i made a full pencil hand print. I then drew over the lines to exaggerate the skins detail. extruding a line to a vanishing point changing the hand into a layered almost paper like structure. the lines have a very constricting nature about them a finger print is often shown to resemble peace but this feels more reaching. this could change dramatically dew to were the vanishing point is i could also try adding 2 or more vanishing points to different part of the structure.
like the triangle drawings its as much about the empty space as the form its self and i feel its worked best were dew to the hand not being flat there is gaps in the print where you can see inside the layers. maybe tomorrow a can experiment with the space between the print more.
this i feel would be a good thing to start with to make a music reactive piece and as the sound is made the individual finger print layers can be pushed back and forth (possibly with a bounce as well) to create the depth of sound effect. with the potential of adding more vanishing points and layering the lines i could begin to separate sections into volume and pitches a possibility.

yago hortal (research)

yago hortal highly expressive paintings look have no disire to hide what they are made of. instead it exposes the paint for its raw beauty. you can really feel the energy made from the brush stroke.
this expressive enery is somthing im tring to resemble in the fluid motion of my triangles now im not going to get as expressive as this with straight nonoverlapping lines but i think i am achiving mopre than i expected.
like me  yago hortal has also left the white viod to contain his explosive seed of creativity. this is highly effective in creating that sense of scale and pertential if the piece was to fill the entire page it would loose that storage of energy becuse it would have been spent.

Tri form

following a similar structure but having the freedom to create other triangle sources. by drawing this one i realized how constricting the other one looks. this drawing is more about braking free as the triangles grow out from the main corner structure where the one before was about containing. the is still that void of space but now it looks for expansion. and making the angle of the main structure obtuse has released tension in the drawing. t me there is also a strong feeling of floating. unlike the other one it is not attached to the edge of the image the bulk of the triangles are at the top of the image like a balloon structure. the curved flowing lines created by the repetition of the triangles also resembles something like seaweed floating in the ocean.
the next move would be to collaborate the 2 triangle drawings and see what sort of feeling is created from the form. my aim is to create a freedom within a constricting structure so i think keeping this flowing form has more freedom than a spring shape and will experiment with different ways of creating it in my sketch book.

hand and head glitch

please click to see bigger.

This is the result of the z brush hand. using z brush tools like the rubber on the drawing i distorted the 3-d mesh. i chose to make it mechanical and shape because i think it has a beauty  in contrast with the organic form of the hand but keeping the same color and tone links the two. to make it seem more real I've added some lens blur to make it feel filmed or photographed. movement was a key factor when i was creating this by making to and placing them in a story board manner they communicate with each other hinting of a story of either creation or destruction.
to take this piece further i would love to animate a figure warping in and out of this form to sound or something along those lines. continue ....

triangle forms

drawing the hand made me realize that i didn't do nearly enough drawing in the previose project and my work become sort of stunted because of it. So I've decided to try and create my own triangle scetches like the sound reactive ones i produced in project 2. i followed a similar structure pattern that was produced by moving the mouse in my coded pieces. starting from the triangle i was then free to explore the structure. this one was made by making a spiral with a triangle. it is interesting to see how the two forms clash and to me the was a lot of tension in the structure i guess from the spiral form it creats and how the triangles are layered it does resemble a spring. by adding the lines i wanted to accentuate that tension and store of enjoy within the structure.
how it is placed on the page is also very important having it at an equate angle helped create that sense of tension like its about give way with the force. the large empty space helps create a void that i quite like the simple pencil on paper or black and white i think is quite beautiful in its nature. also really helps to bring attention to the form. i did explore the idea of having multiple structures floating but single had more power behind it.
something I've discovered is the because of the nature of the pencil the layering of the lines creates a rich black were the structure increases density something that is missing when i produce structures like this on the computer. it is important to give the structure depth so to replicate this if i choose to move on to the computer is a must.

hand drawing

This afternoon i thought i would take a brake from computers and decided to do a large drawing of a hand with heavy percpective on brown paper. The process of drawing makes me look closer at what I'm drawing and really take in what I'm looking at. And it's always good to change the media for a bit to get anther view on the subject/object.
Like my computer created art i like to distort the form of the drawing. I think this is a defiant influence from computer art. In the process of doing this there is that sense of letting go of control, after trying to copy a photo doing something more expressive was very freeing.

I'm choosing to start this project with hands because i find them one of the most interesting parts of our anatomy. the surface each unique to the person a raw source of identity and each crease and in my case scars. we use our hands countless times in a day typing, opening doors, drawing, communicating. this interaction is something i want explore  through the structure of the hand.

starting the Zhand

today i started making the hand sculpt in zbrush. the idea is to create a realistic as possible hand to look at the skin detail creases, pours and texture to make a believable possible model. i don't expect this first model to be very durable when turning to animation and rigging but it will be a good exercise to see what to do and what not to do.
at the first step i all ready found problems. sculpting a head from a sphere worked relatively well because there isn't much putrouding from the base mesh. a hand needs fingers and stretching the mesh out to make each one stretches the mesh to much so the quality becomes to low on fingers and too high on the palm. in an attempt to get to make it more equal all over i turned to Zspheres learning how they work to create a mesh was the first step here are some attempts>>
The mesh this time created creases under the fingers and joined them together there was also a lot of triangles, triangles aren't god in a mesh. with a couple of playing around and searches on youtube i fount this technique where instead of joining the fingers to on "base" sphere to extend out the knuckles like a hammer head to achieve and equal "ish" mesh then pose it into place after-woulds.

after making this digital sculpt the next step is trying to work out how to animate it to split apart. ive been looking at some vimeo videos of seeds spliting there is a "making of" which caught my eye. they have rigged a mesh that opens up like a flower if i can translate the zbrush mesh into blender i might be able to start playing around with rigging and cutting the mesh to make an aniation of the skin opening up. the next step would be to make a paper modle of hand and test the animation options. Manifesto Fragments Part 1 (the final video)
ORVILLE | Making Of (making of popcorn seed)

if i can make a video in theory i can assign a frame to go to allocated to the decibels of sound within processing so zero db would be frame 1  and 100db would be frame 100 and because sound is in waves it should run smoothly without jumping about. and because its hard to create a constant sound the flickering may be played to my advantage and look like the skin is flowing ... or it could look glitchy  but we will see

Antony Gormly at peace

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bruce-clarke/3299026354/
my old man head the pose really reminded me of antony gormlys sculptures were the sculpture look to be generic human form but at the same time thoughtful almost meditating. especially his iron men cast from his own body.
gormly studied meditation for quite some time this is obviously put across in his work. i find his work kind of like an invite into thinking and to just taking my time to look at the world. following the example of the iorn men who stand in peace day in day out on the beaches parks and roof tops.

head glitch idea

(video to be added)

linking back to the triangle glitch but using the head I've sculpted influenced mainly by the channel for easting. fits in well with the seem of separation and goes back to one of my initial sketches

I also did one face on but didn't work as well.

head finished

the final stage i rendered the head and put it into Photoshop to start adding skintone using photo filtres, selective colour, curves and levels. finally overlaying some of the skin texture from the flattened 360 of eds head. this helped make it more realistic as i am overlaying part of a real photo. i was able to keep the shadows the same because when i took the picture (pictures) of ed i used the flash on every part so the skin was flat and just the texture. adding details like hairs and eyelashes really helped lift the image in much the same way as adding pours to the sculpt. the overall i am very pleased with considering its my first attempt at such a detailed sculpt.  If people mistake it for a photo then i will be very chuffed :D. but there is that iry not quite real feel still ... a stillness like a wax model which i kind of like because it makes you look twice. sculpts like this although i've used blur to create more depth like a photograph it will be possible to take that away like a drawing i can harness all the detail i want.
The expression of the face instead of being "generic" has become very much like the man is thinking or meditating. its amazing how i can subtly change the pose and the expression and feel of the pose could completely change. having that power to change how i see fit is something that really appeals to me.
moving on to the final project i want to study the human skin (see final proposal) next thing to do is  make a realistic hand like this head but based on my hand. a hand i imagine will be more challenging as i cant use the symmetry like on a head. the skin detail also may be more challenging with finger prints and overlapping when the fingers are clenched. On Thursday i am attending an all day life drawing class. i will use this to study the human form in detail to use as reference for sculpts like this.
