DAY 14

History drawing
I think today was one of those days where if I new what I was doing I would of tackled it differently. Taking it step by step didn’t work because it all ended up bluring together. But one thing it did fit into was the bird time-lapse photo which is really good and kind of brought a summary to the project especially as everything was based on the gestalts drawing. To go full circle felt much better than just driving forward. Usually how I work is to come up with an idea months before a project then relies it fits so I’m always circulating in ideas I find it helps them develop.

¨     Shapes
¨     Texture
¨     Edges
¨     Positive
¨     Negative
¨     Patterns
¨     Direction of surface

DAY 12

DAY 12 28/09/10
Paper 3-d drawing
The first time ive ever tried to “draw with paper” and me being mainly intreasted in sculpture I think I would of found it very interesting. But it just didn’t happen today. I started by cutting out these complex shapes from my gestalt drawing  as I thought that would be a good place to start. Linking them together started to form water or tree like shapes so I thought about the box plant idea I’ve had and started making box’s but found my self not liking what I was creating and not being able to get out of it. I think at this point I should of started again like if it was a drawing rub certain bits out I should of taken bits away.
a point the tutors made was it was just an idea and could go on to be a sculpture or building or anything which did give a new perspective on what I created.

WEEKEND journey 1

went for a walk with my camera and sketch book round the coast that surrounds the coast at low tide....involved rather lot of rock climbing and some dodgy moments.

took these panorama images related to the feet to eye level drawing ....the dark patches are where my lens was wet (i think) but other than that worked pretty well.

DAY 9

Beach drawing :D
Today’s group activity was pretty fun although at the start we did have some group disagreements. We didn’t get the perspective perfect but it does start to work. The drawing  was made with stones and sea weed which spent half of the day shifting from about 100yards away. Other works I liked : some one spray painted a part of there work which was really effective and also used the depth of the sand to create shading.

todays lecture really opened up the idea of drawing for example to draw 3-d is something ive never considered but should be trying it next week. And especially liked the idea of when children we draw are thoughts and imagenation and as we get older we draw what is around us. I spose that is what I liked about the gastalt drawing I did on the first day we can just reach inside and find something with depth and create space with out seeing it in front of us. Another point that drawing can have properties due to how it is drawn and the intensions so a drawing can have rhythm although still, space/depth although flat , etc
another point mentiond was the idea of programmed visually we can recognize a smiley face at an incredible young age how did we get this programming is it the same with animals ?
we see through 2 eyes to get depth but to draw we need to shut on eye to just capture one eye ….and would it be possible to draw with both eyes ? how would I go about tackling double vision? .

DRAWING CAN BE LEARNT! style copied and joined together to create your own.

Today I had my first life drawing class at woodlane. Really felt free with it a nice break from the intense measured drawing. Also my angle of the figure started to create the visual warp that we were trying to capture yesterday.

DAY 7

Eye to feet drawing
After an extensive briefing of the days challenge things seemed more clear about measured drawing. Eye to feet drawing is stretching where we see so distortion starts to play which was exciting to see the result. This technique I feel could really push my drawing and I think I should try and find challenging angles and places and give it another go.
The main challenge was drawing what your eye tells you and not pre-conceptions from my brain. Patience is key to get things right and found my self going back to things 3-5 times to get it right. Working from the center-line I like the way the drawing reveals its self from dots to skeptic lines and the final confident line. All the construction lines gives a new level seeing the thought that goes into the drawing.

DAY 6

DAY 6  20/09/10
Measured drawing
The most challenging day so far. I grasped the concept of scaling and plotting but in practice it didn’t work as planed. The first object I chose to draw was a rusty sieve we were asked to draw it by eye first of this drawing really helped me relies the importance of measuring right from the beginning and after 4 scaled drawings I was getting pretty close to the right shape the angle of the circular object was incredibly challenging but I kept with it and think I’ve managed to get a near enough likeness. Simon said at the end of the day “you have to be prepared to rubb everything out and start again” something I was not throughout the next 2 hr drawing outside. The spot I chose wasn’t very good and I soon got board and stopped measuring. So, tomorrow I’m going to stick with it and keep the location exiting and hopefully pull through.

DAY 5

“what does it mean to be an artist”
Today we had a lecture about becoming a fine artist or “visual artist”. Ive never put much thought about after schooling and I think this lecture really gave me an exiting prospect of becoming an artist isn’t impossible (but its ruddy hard to make money). Things that cropped up that I’ve never realized like as soon as you finish the course ur out of the bubble and have to try and almost wiggle your self back in, storage and getting funding (things as simple as paints and pencils cost let along 3-d materials). But I like to think I’m pretty divers so for putting on events it could become cheaper because I can design leaflets, websites, print and distribute my self or at least I have experience in it. I am happy to learn that you don’t stop learning and progressing in your art.
Another thing of entering as much as competitions as I can and not selling art if its winning comps because it is publicity is a vital point one that I need to remember and carry out (www.artquest.com)  even a small sketchy painting was winning comps so keep everything.
Something that I liked about the speaker is the way she described what an artist is through a piece called re breather. A piece of dodgy diving equipment usually home made with risk of acid going in ur mouth and sounding very tricky to use. She told us that it is crucial don’t go beyond your endurance. In diving terms you can drown in art you can become stale so knowing when to stop. There is a strong collaboration between machine and people today in art but as the weeks gone on I’ve realized art is a language from a pencil stroke to the way you describe to the way people see it. everything has to work to be successful so don’t cut corners. Another way she described being an artist was a spider plant (having to be resilient and able to spread) which I think I liked more than the re breather and also kind of links with this idea of growth being trapped by boxes that I’ve been playing with.

DAY 4

Last night I made my sculpture using some left over plastic strips, pins, ball pit ball,
wire and a couple of elastic bands (picture needed)
today the activity was to draw what we made and what our partner has made but in different ways not necercrerly worrying about form or shadow or texture together but choosing a specific one to focus on. Lots of new technics that I may use in the future the ones I most enjoyed were the one were u had to feel and continues line but without looking at the page. I think I liked these ones dew to them adding a new dimension to the work to draw by feel you could easily get lost and after I finished the drawing I almost whish I had got lost around the object creating forms by merging part of the object together. The other one exploded the object and really opened upp the idea of scale. It may be benifitual to me to try both together and see what the out come is. Also because in the past I have done photography I could apply this continues line technique to a photo by merging the drawing an photo together to create a mashed up serial object another thing to try.
I did come across some difficulty when asked to draw just the form and not use lines and found my self just drawing the shadow which I don’t think was right so I should look at some form studies and see if I can work out a technique. Simon showed me a good way to get straight or curved edges with a piece of paper and scalpel so maybe I should try and cut out some curves and see if I can just draw the form of my global looking object.
Another way of drawing we did was just drawing with symbols stepping back it looks like a normal drawing but going up close you find an entire new detail a usful idea if I want to add another interest/dimension to my work. Experimenting how we draw a line more showed me the great range of a pencil hopefully with practice I can create a bit more space within my image. Like the first day contrast creates space in the image so when we came to drawing texture I tried to really emphasize the wire to the rubber with soft lines verses hard edged solid lines.
In are evolution there were some artists names mentioned that I should research next when im in the library. Chuck close, sigma pul, pual clay.

Another thing I did today was doodle using the same approach as I did on the first day but using a thin scratchy pen and came up with this image of some sort of growth with box bubbles attempting to control. I find it fasernating starting drawing with no incentive of an out come but looking back I relies it is most likely a response to my surrounding area of the campus where there is growth of plants everywhere being broken by buildings. Would look really good as a hanging sculpture (to pasue further)

DAY 2

First day of Tuts
The activity today was drawing on a A0 piece of paper the biggest thing Ive ever worked on, of which I will have to do more of because it really gave me space to experiment. I used 9b, 6b graphite pencils and a rubber to draw. The main process was about the constant evolvement of the work constantly changing the image even if we liked what we had creating this constant creativity sometimes in the  wrong direction but would always lead to a new Idea found. This also lead me to throw my self at the page with the pencil and rubber changing the marks patterns and shapes as I went. To add another match to the creative flame we were told to draw on each others work which aloud me to absorb some more ideas. The picture I was told to draw on was really detailed with recognizable structures appearing but was lacking the darkness that we were encouraged to create so I went about creating a mass of heavy swirls and blurring with the rubber (a technique I’ve never used before but definitely use again) I was told after would that by me intruding on her drawing it really freed her up and let her almost be more experimental and not think of the consequences.
Over all the day was a very positive creative experience a very good thing to use if I am struggling for ideas because the pencil (and rubber) will create things from my brain that I may not usually see or find.

strengths/weakness

Known Strengths
¨     Willing to try anything new
¨     Well motivated
¨     Positive thinker
¨     Don’t like the box
¨     Proficient with Mac and digital
¨     Sculptural
¨     Usually good with coming up with ideas
¨     Likes helping
¨     Working alone
¨     Working in a group (but not leader)
¨     Being influenced by others
¨     Expressing myself through my work

Known Difficulties
¨   Writing/spelling/grammar
¨   Multi-tasking
¨   Procrastinates
¨   Organization
¨   Taking notes
¨   Speaking my mind through words

My work is usually sculptural in some way allowing to let people walk around rather than the single view of 2-d. although I tend to incorporate digital work in my sculptures and would love to push this further. My Alevel course I was given a lot of freedom so unsure how the tutorial sessions will be for me but I love trying new things and I am taking this course as more a learning activity not how much I can show of (at the start anyway).
At the end of this course I hope to have found a media I am willing to pursue to degree level. Try everything and learn as much as I can.

DAY 1

DAY 1  13/09/10
Been told to keep this journal and document the daily thoughts and process should come in handy and counts for 30% of the course. I have explored the campus and love the amount of plants around all these square but different buildings.
